On Thursday, November 1, 2018, Galit Kaunitz organized a concert to benefit the Eagle’s Nest Food Pantry, in collaboration with the School of Social Work. The food pantry feeds 120 clients and goes through approximately 400lbs of food per week, and the purpose of this concert was to collect non-perishable food and school supplies to fortify the pantry’s shelves. The collage concert featured both students and faculty, and many different genres and styles were represented. Galit Kaunitz and Kim Woolly (bassoon) premiered USM alumnus Ron Hancock’s Mississippi Vignette for oboe and bassoon; Richard Kravchak (oboe) and Michael Bunchman (piano) performed Schumann’s Drei Romanzen; Nicholas Ciraldo was featured as a solo guitarist; saxophonist Jeff Humphrey played selections of Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G Major; the USM flute quintet performed three tangos; and the Southern BelleTones and the Spirit of Southern presented a rousing program of a capella selections.
The concert was a great success! The Hattiesburg community came together to support the pantry in a big way, and showed those struggling with food insecurity that they aren’t alone.
